Cookies and browser storage

The website stores some settings in the browser for convenience. Optional analytics runs only after the visitor allows it.

Settings and browser storage

The main site, publication subdomain and training subdomain each remember the analytics choice separately. The choice to allow or refuse analytics is stored in localStorage under bernev_policy_notice_ack_v2 and bernev_policy_notice_denied_v1. These entries remain until the choice is changed or the site's stored data are cleared; localStorage has no built-in expiry. The font-size preference is stored in localStorage under fontSize.

  • Mobile reading size, reading position and archive search or filter state may be stored in sessionStorage.
  • A functional country or route selection may also be remembered for the tab session and is separate from analytics identification.
  • sessionStorage generally belongs to the tab session, although browser session restoration may restore that state.

Analytics after an affirmative choice

Optional analytics runs after the user makes an affirmative analytics choice. Google Analytics uses first-party cookies named _ga and _ga_<container-id>. Google documents a default expiry of two years; the expiry may be updated on use or changed by settings.

  • Own analytics uses attribution, contact-session and analytics-session identifiers in sessionStorage, together with a first-touch source in localStorage.
  • It may record visited routes, referral or campaign source and contact-click events.
  • These identifiers should not be described as anonymous merely because they do not contain a user's name.
  • When analytics is refused or revoked, known own-analytics browser storage is removed. This does not delete data already transmitted to the site operator, Google or copies held by other parties.

Changing your choice

You can reopen the controls through “Analytics settings”. Reading the website and using contact links remain available after analytics is refused. Simply opening the settings or visiting a page does not grant analytics permission.

  • Browser controls can remove cookies and other site data.
  • Clearing site data may reset saved preferences.
  • The storage period of browser data is separate from the retention period of information already transmitted to the site operator or Google.

Third-party resources

Some publication video-cover images are loaded from YouTube's image host, so loading such an image sends a request to that service. Opening an external messenger or video link is a separate transition to that service. Refusing analytics does not automatically block every connection to a third-party resource.

  • Cookies are browser data and are not, by themselves, legal consent documents.
  • More information about data processing is available in the privacy policy.
